Itinerary

I’m so excited to be taking a small group of photographers on a curated adventure that promises a week filled with exploration, creativity, and connection. Join me this summer in experiencing the mesmerizing beauty and rich history of Wales on our exclusive Un-Retreat Photo Tour. Here’s what to expect each day:

A view of a green field with trees and a house.

Day 1: London to Conwy, Wales
We gather near London Heathrow and embark on a leisurely drive toward Conwy, Wales. Along the way, we’ll stop at scenic locations to snap photos and enjoy snacks before arriving at our accommodation to sleep off our exciting first day!

Day 2: Carneddau Ponies Exploration
After a short workshop with Kevins Morgans and some local exploration in Conwy, we venture into the rugged hillsides to find the resilient Carneddau Ponies, a hardy breed that has survived since Celtic times. Award-winning wildlife photographer Kevin will lead our exploration, sharing invaluable insights about capturing these ponies on camera. This day offers ample opportunities to create compelling wildlife portraits against a stunning landscape backdrop. The sky’s the limit to what you can do with these captures!

Day 3: Scenic Drive and Nanteos Mansion Welcome Feast
We take a picturesque drive through Snowdonia, stopping at historical sites like a castle, before arriving at the grand Nanteos Mansion. With its storied history dating back to the 18th century, the mansion promises a unique blend of luxury and heritage. We’ll settle into our private house and enjoy a warm welcome feast in the main house.

Day 4: Nanteos Mansion Tour and Photography
After an early morning on-location photography session, local historian and our dear friend, Janet Joel will guide us on a tour of the mansion and its lush grounds. I first met Janet last year when I booked a surprise visit to Nanteos with my mum. Our family connection dates back to when my great, great-grandfather was head groundskeeper, he lived in the lodge house at the entrance where his children were born. Janet’s connection to Nanteos House runs even deeper than my own, she’s penned multiple books on the history of Nanteos and if her beautiful tattoo of the house is any clue, it’s fair to say she is slightly obsessed! The evening brings dinner and activities, allowing us to unwind and soak in the atmosphere of the estate.

Day 5: Surprise Excursion and Doggy Models
Be ready for a surprise adventure today, followed by an evening photography session featuring doggy models in Aberystwyth. We’ll finish the day with a traditional fish & chip supper on the scenic seafront.

Day 6: Scenic Photography and Afternoon Tea
Start the morning with another on-location photography session before recharging with a traditional afternoon tea. The evening will be filled with good food, fun, and relaxation …and of course some business chat.

Day 7: Final Sessions and Farewell Dinner
Our last full day features a final photography session, plus an art sales workshop. We’ll celebrate our time together with a joyous farewell dinner, reminiscing on the memories we’ve made.

Day 8: Return to London
After a hearty breakfast, we journey back to London, pausing at a few mystery stops before bidding farewell to our new friends, excited for our next shared adventure.

The Splendor of Nanteos Mansion

Historical Overview
Nanteos Mansion sits atop the site of an ancient manor house called Neuadd Llawdden. The old manor remains visible in the mansion’s cellars, with the original doors and windows still intact. The stone flooring, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, hints at its origins dating back to the 11th century.

Construction of Nanteos Mansion began in 1739 under Thomas Powell, an MP for Cardiganshire, who utilized the wealth of his wife, Mary Frederick. Following Thomas’s death, his brother Reverend William Powell completed the work, making it a family home for nearly 180 years.

The estate then passed through various owners, and its fortunes waned until a recent multi-million-pound refurbishment restored this Grade I listed mansion and its surrounding grounds. Nanteos Mansion Country House Hotel now welcomes visitors to explore its fascinating history and picturesque gardens.

Aberystwyth: Coastal Beauty and Culture

Close to Nanteos Mansion, Aberystwyth is a coastal town brimming with charm and history. With its striking Victorian architecture, lively arts scene, and iconic seafront promenade, Aberystwyth seamlessly blends the past and present. Its cultural attractions, unique eateries, and nearby landscapes make it a hub for creativity and exploration. Upon visiting last year, I was delighted at how many locals enjoyed walking the promenade with their dogs before sunset!
