Coat Color
The first step in planning out a color scheme for your wardrobe is what color is your dog’s coat? We certainly don’t want to wear an outfit that completely matches your dog, we would lose a lot of detail. Try using pastels with a few pieces of contrast and texture throughout your outfit, this will create dimension to your portraits. Adding a soft contrast to both you and your dog while still tying your portrait together is the perfect way to set your pet session up for success. While coat color is an important baseline to planning out what colors you want to wear with your dog, you also want to consider the location and season of your portraits.
Location & Weather
After deciding which colors work best with your dog it’s time to consider your surroundings and the weather. While a leather jacket layered over your favorite long sleeved dress sounds amazing, you don’t necessarily want to wear that when it’s 92 degrees mid summer. Avoid sweating or shivering by planning for seasonal weather on the day of your portraits. Just how we don’t want to worry about temperatures, we also want to consider the location and surroundings of your portraits. If you plan to pose near a rich and green tree line, try to lean away from green tones in your wardrobe, instead, try to wear soft neutral shades within your outfit. This allows you and your dog to stand out perfectly in your portrait! Now that we have a steady foundation for what colors you should wear in your photos it’s time for the final piece, your Walls!
Your Walls
I know what you’re thinking, but your walls play a vital role in how your finished artwork looks in your home and it actually starts in the beginning! If you have a specific place in mind that you hope to display your photos with your dog, it’s a lot easier to plan ahead of time. For example, if your walls are within the nude to brown family, you will want to avoid locations that have a large amount of those colors especially if your dog is brown. You don’t want to wear an outfit that makes both you and your dog blend into the background or worse, stick out like a sore thumb! Instead, lean more towards neutral colors in the blue family or even rock a cream statement piece with darker accents for depth! After you’ve finished your session with your dog, it is much easier to decide where you want to display your favorite portraits in your home!
Now it’s time to build the perfect color scheme for you and your dog’s upcoming portraits. Just remember: Coat, Location and Walls! You’ve got this!
BONUS
After establishing the perfect color scheme to wear for your photos with your furry pal, don’t forget to consider what breed they are. While this isn’t applicable to every dog, you may have a unique breed with distinguished features like a curly or long coat. I recommend avoiding a wardrobe that has textures like your dog. For example, if you have a standard poodle, you would want to avoid layering your outfit with a Sherpa jacket. While we love our dogs dearly, we don’t necessarily want to become them!
