Atlanta Area Couples Ranch Shoot | Chris & Jasmine with Black Percheron ‘Stella’

blonde sultry lady with black horse

She lifted her big warm eyes and fixed them on the camera, she held on to her smoldering pout for a just a few more moments before crinkling her nose and giggling at another one of Chris’ bad puns. This was pretty much how the entire session went; Serious – Shoot – (Wake up Stella) – Shoot – Pun – Giggle – Shoot; all the while myself and my horse wrangler husband, Weston erupting into fits of laughter as Chris made some funny comment, sometimes at Jasmine’s expense! We always enjoy the relaxed vibe we cultivate at our sessions but my cheeks were seriously hurting from this one!

Now virtually inseparable, the couple met at work. Chris is a paramedic and Jasmine an EMT. Although the work can be stressful, with long hours leaving them struggling for down-time, when they are not working they enjoy time together at the gun range or binge watching ‘Heartland’ on Netflix.  Aspiring cowgirl Jasmine, who also rides in her free time says that after their weekend together making new memories at the Ranch, she could easily see herself in this line of work. My guess is that true gentleman Chris would likely be happy anywhere, so long as he could bring his and bourbon and collection of old pistols with him!

What fascinated me more is how relaxed they were around horses. Chris who had never ridden a horse before their visit, handled Stella like a pro and Jasmine’s tender connection with all horses was undeniable. Other than sneezing chewed up grain all over Jasmines beautiful white dress before we even left the barn; Stella’s performance was well, “Stellar” (another pun for you, Chris). Equipped with a sturdy body and gentle nature, Stella has had been carrying around kids and their parents our trails for years, so when Jasmine requested a black horse, we knew it was Stella’s time to shine! We took a break about half way into their session, little did we know that this would turn into yet another amazing opportunity to capture Jasmine bonding with some of our newest foals

Unlike many young couples in the early stages of their relationship, Jasmine and Chris had already experienced a photo session together when they won a mini-session at a friend’s wedding. Of course they took full advantage of their good fortune yet always felt that they were missing out on part of the experience due to the spontaneous nature of their prize. That’s when I knew that we were the perfect fit! I knew that I could deliver an unforgettable experience and a unique opportunity to capture this time in their lives during their stay with us at the ranch.

We connected immediately when we talked about the importance of portraiture, aside from photo booth shots currently displayed frameless in her Louisville, KY apartment. She wanted more than just a “couple of selfies in frames from Hobby Lobby”.

During their consultation and planning calls with me, it was clear that we had a lot in common. I literally drooled over Jasmines’ bedroom Rustic-Chic decor as I envisioned the framed portrait that would hang over her bed. Jasmine an I have the same dream of building our own homes someday and (like me) she loves to hunt for antique and unique pieces to decorate her space. She doesn’t know this yet but I may be calling on her to help me decorate our future home!

Impressive Grulla Gelding | Equine Portrait Session | Madison, GA

‘There’s a nobility in his eye, a regal serenity about him. Does he not personify all that men try to be and never can be?- Michael Morpurgo – War Horse

Meet Badger, a gorgeous grulla gelding (that’s a mouthful, isn’t it?). I first met Badger and his human, Debbie a couple of years ago when they took their annual trip to Southern Cross Guest Ranch. Debbie and her husband, Tony, visit us every year with their horses to enjoy a few days of trail riding with their favorite boys.

Watching them interact, it’s quite obvious that they have a deep connection.  Badger gets compliments on almost every ride since he’s an unusual color – but he’s just as beautiful on the inside!

Badger’s sire is the late Molly’s Partner and he has Hancock , Impressive and AQHA hall of Fame inductee, Mr. Bar None in his lines. Knowing he would likely have a good mind about him, Debbiepurchased Badger before he was born from breeder Brenda Johnson, the owner of his Sire. Badger was 5 months old when they bought him home and has been Debbie’s best riding partner since he was about 2 ½.

The pair love to trail ride around their home in Pierson, Florida just about every weekend, especially on the shady trails of “Shangri-La” in Ocala, FL.  Badger enjoys attending large organized rides too. Badger has such a big heart, he’s gentle as can be and just loves all of the attention he gets everywhere he goes! According to Debbie “Mr Personality” gets recognized more often that she does out on the trails. So much so that she’s convinced he has some kind of secret night time social life she doesn’t know about!

He has a super laid back personality and he has a very funny sense of humor!  One of his favorite tricks is to join Debbie on her morning jog in the pasture, except he’s not such a good running partner as you might think – he will chase her down and cut her off so he can get a good scratch!   Perhaps Debbie should have named him “Shadow”, since he will also try to follow her into restrooms at some of the parks they go to and is adamant that he can fit into the tack room in their trailer if Debbie is in there!

When Badger isn’t trail riding or munching on carrots and sugar-cinnamon donuts, he and Debbie are busy working with their trainer Wendy Steele of S & S Stables. Wendy describes Badger as being “like that popular football player in high school that everyone loves.”

It was a pleasure photographing this beautiful boy in his authentic reproduction Civil War tack. We used my favorite trick, the “All Ears” App (the hoofbeat sound was a favorite) to get those cute ears up and gorgeous neck flexes. I’m looking forward to doing another photo session with Debbie, Badger, Tony and his equally beautiful horse, Buck (Badger’s Half-Brother) when they return to the ranch in October!

Don’t wait until it’s too late | A tribute to my handsome man, Prince (AQHA Principle Equity)

AQHA Principle Equity Bay stallion
Here’s my handsome, whiskers and all.

His head hung in my hands with his cold, clammy nose pressed against me; I sobbed (as I am now, writing this) into the mane of our beloved stallion as the vet confirmed my worst fear, that the injury he sustained had caused internal bleeding. His body quivered and he heaved in pain with each labored breath he took. There was no saving him, all we could do was ease his suffering.

Prince (‘Principle Equity’), grandson of ‘Big Investment’ was a retired from showing Western Pleasure due to a hock injury. He came to Southern Cross Guest Ranch in 2014 and was the sire to my colt, Wrangler (aptly named, VF Pocket Change). He was my would-be future ‘lawnmower’ once he retired from stud. I would groom him when I needed some ‘horse therapy’ and he was always my first stop for kisses at the barn, even before my own horses. Halfway down the barn aisle I would call out “where’s my kisses?”, by the time I reached his stall next to the barn office, his whiskery nose was there, poking out of the feeding hole, ready and waiting to nuzzle my cheek for treats. He was a true gentleman, even when consumed with the excitement of breeding he was well-mannered and gentle, more concerned with grazing than prancing about around the mare to be covered like most studs do. I was standing outside his stall, smooching with him the very moment Wes (my now husband) and I first met a few years ago; ever since, he was referred to as my “other man”. I remember one day he was laying on his fresh savings (he LOVED a fresh bed) and I was brushing him and loving on him while feeding him carrots. My husband walked in, pulled a hoof pick out of his pocket and picked his feet…Prince, still enjoying his afternoon lie-down, didn’t bat an eyelash. He was such a laid back, sweet, special boy.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take my own advice and take ton of photos of him while his was still with us, but I do have a few. The saving grace is that (thanks to Prince’s owner); I still have a piece of Prince in my Wrangler. I am heartbroken and full of regret that at just 17, his last hours were spent in pain, instead of enjoying his golden years grazing outside with his son. Though my name wasn’t on his papers; he had my heart, in which he has left a huge void.

Prince with his Son “Wrangler” (VF Pocket Change)

Yesterday was a harsh reminder to me why what we do as photographers (equine and otherwise) is so, so important. And that any moment could be our last opportunity to enjoy each other and what we so easily take for granted.

Please, go for that trail ride even though you are busy, linger a little longer in the barn, feed them all the darn treats you want and take all the photos you can because tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us.

My handsome Prince,

You never said I’m leaving

You never said goodbye

You were gone before I knew it,

And only God knew why

A million times I needed you,

A million times I cried

If love alone could have saved you,

You never would have died

In life I loved you dearly

In death I love you still

In my heart you hold a place,

That no one could ever fill

It broke my heart to lose you,

But you didn’t go alone

For part of me went with you,

The day God took you home. – Author Unknown

Rest easy sweet boy, until we meet again X

Special thanks to Dr. Chloe Hancock for her compassion and the team at Piedmont Equine for their ongoing dedication to the care of our horses.

Ranch Family Photo Session | Schneider Family Photos

Carrots add a great pop of color and fun times to a horse related photo session!

He squealed with excitement as he clutched the fresh bunch of carrots close to his body and laughed with delight as the timid miniature horse edged closer, peeking through his bushy forelock.  Charlie (4) is the youngest of pilot, Air-force musician and all round superhero, Donna’s three beautiful kids and boy is he a character! – His infectious laugh reminds me of my not-so-little-now brother at his age.  His two older sisters, Sam (11) and Jessie (9) are equally as much fun to be around. This is Donna’s second photo session with me this year at Georgia’s very own dude ranch, Southern Cross Guest Ranch.  After Jessie & Hope’s horse and rider session back in March, Donna couldn’t wait to get more canvas prints displayed over her mantle in her lodge style home in Springfield, MO

Donna’s husband, also a pilot is often working away and (now) stay-at-home-Mom, Donna has her hands full with all of their activities.  Despite their busy lifestyle, they make it a priority to spend as much family time together as possible, hiking, fishing and of course horseback riding!  They enjoy the outdoors together, especially at home with their dogs and horses.   I find it wonderful how three kids get along so well with each other, particularly considering their three, very different personalities. It’s their uniqueness that Donna wanted to capture during this Family Session at the Ranch, to remember her kids at their current ages, before they grow up!

sisters with miniature horse

Sporty Sam enjoys Basketball, Softball and Gymnastics with her sister.  She is laid back, super kind and has a charitable nature.  This is evident watching her interact with her younger siblings. Her Mom is very mindful that she is growing up fast, and rightly so!  Sam has already decided that she wants to become a sports coach or a pilot when she leaves school; I have no doubt she would excel in both!

Story Boxes are one of my favorite products!

Horses are Jessie’s first love – she has an unmistakable bond with animals and could quite easily spend all day with them, not uttering a word.   It’s no wonder that she wants to be a veterinarian or a horse trainer when she grows up!  Perhaps one day she can be Weston’s assistant!  She is a little more reserved than her siblings, intense to be precise – but delightful nonetheless!  It took Jessie a little while to open up to Weston & I during their last session but I am so glad that we got to spend some time getting to know one another.  A very talented young artist, Jessie designed her own artwork to be laser engraved on her walnut box from her horse and rider session with Hope.

And then there’s Charlie, who enjoyed his few days riding tandem with Donna at the Ranch.  He had me in fits of laughter throughout the session!  Pretending to fish with a branch and hanging from a tree giggling at my bad monkey noises, his imagination and character knows no bounds!  I think the highlight for me was convincing him to wear a cowboy hat for part of the session as he fed carrots to wee-man, my miniature horse.  Which later turned out to be “the shot” for the Donna’s Wall Art.

Donna,

Thank you for the honor of capturing your sweet kids at these stages in their lives, and for opening up your home (virtually) for me to create some custom art for you.  I hope that it will provide you with years of happiness and fond memories!

Until next time!
